Description

This is an empirically derived formula designed to treat reflux oesophagitis and non-ulcer dyspepsia. The pathodynamics of these conditions involve Stomach Heat (or Damp-Heat), Qi stagnation (with Stomach Qi counterflow and Spleen-Stomach disharmony) and generally some degree of Liver constraint.

The underlying causes include dietary factors, emotional strain, and age related decline of the health Qi (notably the Spleen-Stomach). Inappropriate diet, such as excessive intake of fried, oily, rich foods and alcohol generate Heat or Damp-Heat in the Stomach. Prolonged or intense emotional strain (e.g. stress, anger, unfulfilled desires, etc.) causes Liver Qi constraint with resultant Qi stagnation in the middle Jiao, and/or Liver Qi invasion of the Spleen-Stomach. According to the Nei Jing, at around 35 years in women and 40 years in men the health Qi begins to decline manifesting in a marked decline of Stomach function, amongst other things. These factors together make middle aged people particularly vulnerable to these two disorders.

In order to focus the treatment on the actual disease process, the formula is directed primarily towards clearing Heat and regulating the Qi in the Spleen and Stomach, with only a minimal number of ingredients to tonify the Spleen-Stomach and soothe the Liver. Therefore, patients that present with pronounced Liver constraint or Spleen-Stomach Qi deficiency should also receive treatment with an additional formula as discussed above.
