Sodium sulfate and silica are for mineral supplementation.

Prescribing Information
Silica and sulfate ions are required for connective tissue integrity. Sulfate ions are involved in detoxification. Sodium plays a key role in fluid balance throughout the body, and in connective tissue, sulfate is also involved.

• Connective tissue: Silica acts as an important connective tissue cross-linking agent, contributing to the architecture and resilience of connective tissue by building bridges between elastin, collagen and mucopolysaccharides (such as chondroitin sulfate and other glycosaminoglycans), which aids in tissue stability and rigidity.
• Sulfate is a structural component of many glycosaminoglycans, proteoglycans, glycolipids and glycoproteins and as such, acts similarly to silica as a stabiliser of connective tissue, contributing to its strength, elasticity and hydration.
• Fluid balance: In the extracellular matrix, sulfated proteoglycans have a strong negative charge. This attracts cations such as sodium, which in turn attracts water, hydrating the connective tissue mesh and maintaining its integrity. Sodium and sulfate thus act together to maintain fluid balance within connective tissue
• Detoxification: Sulfur compounds are involved in phase II detoxification (conjugation), where they render metabolites more water-soluble, thereby inactivating them and facilitating their excretion in the bile, faeces or urine. Sodium is required for bile production, and is incorporated into the conjugation products of several bile salts.

Sodium sulfate - anhydrous	195mg
(elemental sodium	63.1mg)
Silicon dioxide	33mg
each tablet contains lactose	200mg

 

Cautions

Caution may be required in some patients due to sodium content. S.S.S. may interact with certain other medications your patients may be taking. Sodium may increase the risk of oedema associated with antihypertensive agents (calcium channel blockers, vasodilators), corticosteroids, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents, oestrogens, liquorice and carbenoxolone.
